Out at Sea began with a vintage mid-century maritime print by renowned marine artist Montague Dawson, sourced locally by The Hermit on Green Street. Rather than simply restoring or reframing the found piece, we brought it to artist Karla Hunter with an idea: create something entirely new while allowing the history of the original artwork to remain part of its story.
Karla painted directly onto the vintage work, extending Dawson's maritime scene beyond its original boundaries and transforming it through her own distinctive hand. Her signature horizontal stripe travels directly over the artwork and onto the vintage wooden frame itself — turning the frame into part of the finished piece.The result exists somewhere between found art, vintage maritime work, and contemporar y painting.
Signed along the bottom HERMIT × MONTAGUE DAWSON × K. HUNTER, the piece brings together three contributors separated by generations: Dawson's original maritime imagery, The Hermit's locally sourced vintage find and concept, and Hunter's contemporary interpretation.
This is the first collaboration of its kind between The Hermit on Green Street and K. Hunter Art, and the only piece that will be made in this exact form. No prints or reproductions will be produced.
